Military Influence in Fashion: Part 1: The Middle Ages

This image is a Byzantine icon, the man on the left is St. George who held the rank of Tribunos -Tribune. His rank is that of an officer and is demonstrated by the red greaves he wears and long spear he holds. [1]

The dates of the Byzantine empire are approximately from the 10th -15th century AD. The Byzantine Empire was known as the Roman Empire of the middle ages by its inhabitants. [2] This association with the Romans perhaps lends to the similar full body armor.
