Military Influence in Fashion: Part 1: The Middle Ages

During the middle ages, armor covered every part of the knight’s body, very often extending to the horse. "Until the 12th century, armor consisted mostly of chain mail, helmet, and shields. By the 13th and 14th centuries, weaponry was so lethal that chain mail armor was substituted by rigid plate armor. Parts of the body not covered by the plate armor were protected by chain mail of different lengths, and shields were no longer used." [1]

This image depicts the full body armor worn by medieval knights of the 13th and 14th centuries.
